Lone Star Rally

From the rumble heard all around Galveston, it's evident that the Lone Star Rally has made it's way back to the island.  Although not a biker myself, I've always been a big fan of the rally because it brings such an interesting and diverse crowd.  I've been taking pictures at the rally just about every year and am looking forward to this afternoon to attend again.  I've put a collection of those pictures together for anyone that is interested.  It is a FREE pdf and is available at this link: Motorcycle Abstracts Free Download As always, comments are appreciated

That's a crazy looking cloud.

Once again, I've gone far too long between posts. I took these photos several months ago, processed them almost immediately, then let them sit on my computer "gathering dust." This has become a habit of mine that I need to stop. Hopefully, you'll be seeing more from me as I attempt to break my bad habits. I stumbled upon this impressive cloud while walking my dog around the neighborhood.  I turned to my wife and said "That's a crazy looking cloud."  She agreed.

I don't often take my camera with me on these walks, so I was truly lucky to have my camera that evening. I've noticed more times than not, that when I have my camera, I find things I want to photograph, but when I don't have it, it's very rare that I feel like I've missed something.  I'm not exactly sure what that last statement means, but I think I'll start carrying my camera with me more often.

Lessons I've learned from writing this post.

1.  Post more often.

2.  Take camera everywhere.

15 Minutes in the Texas Capitol

My wife and I had a bit of time to burn before heading to a family member's wedding in Austin.  After a short walk over to the Capitol, we quickly realized we didn't have as much time as we thought.  It is a beautiful and impressive building with lots of photographic possibilities. Next time I'll be sure to allocate more than 15 minutes to this wonderful structure.

Smithville, TX

Recently, my wife and our two dogs made our annual pilgrimage to a small town in Texas for a long weekend.  Smithville, located between Austin and La Grange, was our destination this year.  We spent a couple of relaxing days at a rental house by the Colorado River.  It was a good get away from our daily grind.  We got hungry at one point and made our way into town to get a bite to eat and to check out Main Street. It was just what is expected of a small Texas town.  Plenty of interesting small brick buildings, many with faded painted signs on the side.   I liked this place, but it seems that this part of the town has seen better days.  Other than a handful of antique stores, most of the rest of the buildings were for rent or for sale. Embracing the Imperfect

For as long as I can remember, I've avoided including power lines, cell towers, street lights, etc.. in my photographs.  I always saw them as something that shouldn't be included in my compositions.  They were extraneous bits that were getting in the way of my otherwise "perfect" image.  I'd change my position, select a different lens, crop, or just give up entirely and not even make an image with the irratating stuff in it.  That "stuff" exists in this world and I can no longer try to avoid it.  I've decided to embrace these things that have annoyed me for so long.  It is no longer something to be avoided but something I am embracing as a subject.
